Canvas - product information

Hanging a work of art on canvas on the wall is always a good idea! But what exactly is canvas and what materials are used by Arte Urbano? On this page we tell you more about it

The material

Canvas is a plain-woven fabric typically made out of cotton and, to a lesser extent, linen, although historically it was made from hemp. Canvas fabric is known for being durable, sturdy, and heavy duty. The word "canvas" is derived from the 13th century Anglo-French canevaz and the Old French canevas. At Arte Urbano we use 280gsm luxurious polyester material which is finished with a protective layer against sun, water and light scratches.

The frame

The canvas is always stretched on a wooden frame. This is called a stretcher. Sustainable wood is used for this. You can easily hang this wooden frame on a wall or place it on, for example, a low piece of furniture or a wooden shelf on the wall.

The artwork is pulled over the edges of the frame. This ensures that it becomes a beautiful whole. Each artwork is shipped in a box to prevent damage.

Did you know that canvas has been used in Italy since the 14th century? One of the earliest surviving oil on canvas is a French Madonna with Angels from around 1410.

If canvas is not the material you are looking for, order a work of art on a poster. Check out this page for more information about our posters.
